  • Traditional gifts rule as shoppers plan to spend $21.4 billion for Mother's Day

Houston, Texas Published by, Author: Mike D. Smith

This Mother's Day, Americans are expected to spend on average $172.22 to celebrate their moms, one projection shows.

The National Retail Federation says that even though that predicted average is about 40 cents lower than 2015, total spending is expected to reach $21.4 billion, slightly higher than in 2015.

The trade organization's survey, done by Prosper Insights and Analytics, shows jewelry will contribute the most -- $4.2 billion -- to the overall total. Across age, gender, income and geographic groups in the survey, more than 4 in 5 respondents said they will celebrate Mother's Day.

"Valentine's and Mother's Day are kind of 'sweetness' holidays," said Barbara Stewart, retail and consumer science professor at the University of Houston. "You want someone to feel cared for, but thankfully it's not gone to the level of Christmas."

Topping shoppers' preferences are perennial, tried-and-true greeting cards, with 78.4 percent saying they'll buy one for mom this year. About two-thirds said they plan to buy flowers and 43 percent are giving gift cards and letting mom decide what she wants.

Restaurants, predictably, will be busy, with 55 percent planning a "special outing, such as dinner or brunch." That's in line with a 2015 survey of moms by DealNews, a website that tracks retailer activity. Most mothers responded they were satisfied with a phone call or brunch, lunch or dinner said Benjamin Glaser, an editor with DealNews.
"This is a holiday that really sticks to tradition," Glaser said.

Another tradition that continues: Mother's Day remains a last-minute shopping holiday not known for blockbuster discounts. Retailers in traditional gift categories like jewelry and perfume are beginning to offer more sales. Clothing retailers also cycle out their spring inventory about this time of year to prepare for summer, which can produce discounts.

Gadgets and tech-related gifts are gradually growing in popularity, with some electronics retailers beginning to time discounts with Mother's Day. About 14 percent of shoppers in the NRF survey said they are browsing for electronics and computer-related accessories, up from 11 percent in 2007 -- possibly a reflection that younger generations that grew up with smartphones and tablets now are becoming mothers themselves, Glaser said.

    Mother's Day is Sunday.

Flowers, along with greeting cards and treating mothers to meals, and other traditional gifts are among those Americans say they're most likely to purchase for Mother's Day, according to the National Retail Federation.
